Determination of potentials of solar energy for electric generation in Costa Rica
Abstract
It is supposed the existence of a high solar potential in Costa Rica. The main objective of this
research is to determine the theoretical and technical national potential for solar electricity
generation. The methodology involves the use of geographical information systems (GIS) for the
determination of all phyradiation and the optimum
β
angles was done, as a base for the calculation
of energy (GWh/year) and power (MW).
The research also determines that direct solar radiation level in our country, is far below the
minimumacceptable level of 1800kWh/m2*year andhence, is not attracted for solar thermoelectric
developments.
The final results show that for PV systems, there is a theoretical potential of 43 880 504GWh/year.
From this value, supposing 100% efficiency and a plant factor of 0,19, it is possible to estimate a
theoretical power of 26 346 000 MW. Also, for the technical PV potential, the final results show
values of 656 195GWh/year in terms of energy and 576 747 MW in terms of power.
It can be concluded that PV technical potential for electricity generation is extremely high in
Costa Rica. According to obtained results, solar energy is at present, the most abundant renewable
resource for electricity generation in our country.
Finally, the results of the prioritization show the main zones of our country that under certain
criteria, have the best conditions for the future development of solar energy projects. Most of
them are located on the north zone and north and central pacific zones.

Resumen
En la actualidad existe una gran preocupación para poder utilizar energías limpias en todo el país
y especialmente el uso de la energía solar térmica y fotovoltaica las cuales como tecnologías
renovables no son despreciables. La presente idea se propone con el fin de generar datos de
interés que nos muestren la potencialidad que nos permita aprovechar la energía solar en
diferentes actividades productivas agropecuarias en la zona rural de la región Huetar Norte y
Chorotega de Costa Rica a través de sistemas fotovoltaicos y térmicos: termosifónicos y forzados
de calentamiento de agua para aplicarlos en sistemas agropecuarios. Se propone diseñar,
implementar y evaluar sistemas fotovoltaicos, termosifónicos y forzados de calentamiento de
agua para ser usados en lecherías, plantas de matanza y bajar la factura de pago de electricidad
en las instalaciones productivas agropecuarias buscando sistemas más amigables con el ambiente
